9.30 a.m. at Shanthi Ashram:? a prayer said in English by 12 KG children, yelling at the top of their voices, marks the beginning of a new day at St. Lawrence Convent School. Fire is opened and we are prepared, armed with a sufficient amount of slate pencils and chocolates as a reward for good behavior. The lesson starts with vocabulary and writing practice. Together with our Indian colleague we assign the children writing tasks according to their level of knowledge. While some children are still struggling with the ABC others are already able to write complicated words like months and even small sentences. Although in the beginning we never would have believed that we could teach the children at least something, we are now proud to see their improvement.

Some of those who in the beginning only ran around shouting and nearly driving us insane are now able to write the whole ABC and some simple words. But we are most proud of the fact that they are actually participating in class. Despite this these success the children?s ability to drive us up the walls remains undiminished. If for example you are busy explaining something to one of your students and you look up to notice that he is eating a piece of chalk, which you just lent him, you start to question your sanity, or rather the child?s.

After short tiffin break at 10.30 a.m. the lesson continues with speaking practice. This part of the lesson is always a lot of fun and good for surprises, since some of our children are unintentionally funny while speaking English.? One day we discovered the secret gangsta in one of our boys: When we asked him for his name he answered ?I am da Joston!?? And Sanid surprised us with wisdom by simply answering the question ?How old are you?? with ?Ooooold.?? Following the speaking practice it?s time for nursery rhymes and singing games. The children are especially fond of the ?monkey song? and the ?little birdy? or any game that allows them to jump around and scream.

The lesson is finished by playtime. While they are using their toys as mobiles or create some cubes and other figures with them, we are discussing about their behavior. For good behavior in each of the two parts (writing and speaking/singing/playing) of the lesson they can earn a star, means two possible stars per day. And for ten starts they receive one chocolate. At 12 o?clock the Convent cook brings the food. After lunch the parents pick up their children and School is over.

Although the job of a KG teacher can be stressful, we love it and would never want to trade it in.
