The Evolution of a Scientific American Information Graphic: Stellar Life Cycle
As the art director of information graphics at Scientific American, I?m charged with developing explanatory art for some pretty mind-blowing topics. Our team?text editor, expert author, artist, and me?often works toward illustrating a process or concept that has never been rendered before, or may have only been visualized for other specialists in the field in the form of a journal article or conference slide. In other cases, we?re adding new layers of information or tweaking more familiar topics, as recent discoveries change or build upon previous ideas. My job is to shake out the visual jargon, organize the information, and work with freelance illustrators to bring these concepts alive for specialists and non-specialists alike.
In an article by Donald Goldsmith in Scientific American?s March 2012 issue, the illustration concept emerged quickly, but the details required a fair amount of back-and-forth to sort out. Upon reading an early draft of the manuscript, I thought it would be helpful to provide visual context for the concept of stellar evolution, particularly as it relates to mass: Stars of different masses die in different ways. Within this framework, we could introduce the new theoretical class of star discussed in the text?helium white dwarfs. We could use great primer information from Chandra as a point of inspiration, then update and customize to help illustrate our specific story.
The animation above shows the evolution of that art box, starting with how the information could fit into the larger story, then drilling down into the specifics of what, exactly, it would show. In the top right corner, we presented a basic star life cycle. In the chart below, we broke things down by mass, and showed variations on that theme, with a nod to relative time. The layout and general structure for the graphic remained pretty true to the original vision. But as you can see, the details were quite fluid as Scientific American?s George Musser (the text editor) and I sorted out specifics with Goldsmith. Tiny and repeated shifts in the content and symbol position were required as we hashed out the content. And then, some final aesthetic tweaks developed as artist Malcolm Godwin refined his renderings and brought the box to life. We hope you enjoy the final product. Backed by a full orchestra that included Roots drummer ?uestlove and Young Guru playing DJ, Hov took the stage just before 9 p.m. in a white tux jacket and holding a bottle of champagne. Jay began the night by shouting the iconic line from his 2003 song "Public Service Announcement" in which he declares "allow me to reintroduce myself, my name is Hov."
Among the guests who joined him over the course of the show were Alicia Keys and Nas, but the one cameo everyone was waiting for was Blue's cooing in the song "Glory," which Jay released just days after his daughter's birth.

Teach for China: Bringing educational equality to rural children ...
China?s rural schools have a severe shortage of teachers, resulting in crowded classrooms, sometimes numbering 80 students. Many rural teachers have only completed high school themselves and native English instructors are rare. While the government has a high commitment to raising the quality of rural education, there is a staggering amount of work to do.
That?s where Teach for China (TFC) sees its value. Now in its third year, TFC is the first alternate sourcing teaching program of its kind in China and follows existing models like Teach for America. Its mission is to eliminate the educational inequality in China by enlisting college graduates from prestigious US and Chinese Universities like Harvard, Yale, Peking and Tsinghua.
TFC sends cross-cultural teams to under-resourced primary and middle schools in Yunnan and Guangdong provinces. This school year the program has over 150 teaching fellows who are working to educate students beyond their ABCs.
Breaking the cycle of complacency
High school and college are too expensive for most rural Chinese families. Many parents (who often have lower education levels) are resigned to the fact that their children will probably follow them by becoming farmers or migrant workers after completing middle school.
According to second year fellow Hao Linshuo, ?Students receive no wholehearted confidence from their influencers. Even the local teachers don?t believe the kids can really succeed.?
To combat the complacent attitude, fellows like Linshuo and Jarlene Choy, who teach at the same school in Yunnan, work to engage students, their families and teachers.
Linshuo makes home visits to two-thirds of her students and meets with students one on one.
?Talking to them individually takes a lot of time, but I feel like it is worth it,? she said. ?They rarely get special or individual attention.?
Song and dance
Linshuo said her student Fugen was one such child. Unofficially diagnosed with Asperger?s syndrome, he had almost no friends, rarely spoke and was last in the class. Fugen?s mother had given up hope but she told Linshuo her son did enjoy one thing?dancing.
?I thought it might be a connection point with him,? said Linshuo. ?I signed him up for a performance at our school art festival and practiced a dance with him.?
In front of nearly 2000 students and faculty, Fugen performed his dance and won first prize in the dancing category. He later wrote an essay about it, saying that he had never before been so confident and he felt that someone actually cared about him. His grades have since improved and he talks more both inside and outside of the classroom. He is also applying to a high school with an art focus.
Linshuo doesn?t expect to change a child?s entire life, but she says, ?I can change a short period of his life, which might bring more to his life later on.?
Creative expansion
For TFC fellows, quelling complacency means broadening students? existing educational opportunities.
?I feel like there is a lot out there that I want to expose them to so they can have bigger goals beyond just what they can see here,? said Jarlene.
In addition to following the regular curriculum, fellows plan extracurricular activities, use songs to teach and host events. They also encourage other local teachers to incorporate creative activities into their lesson plans.
The art of teaching
Jarlene, a first year fellow, admits that mastering the classroom is a challenge. In her class of 59 she says, ?A lot of kids have been passed thru but haven't mastered the foundational skills yet.? Additionally, there is no provision for children with learning disabilities and special needs.
Linshuo and Jarlene say they receive a lot of support from TFC, beginning with an intensive training the summer before classes start. Monthly professional development conferences are held every month to further educate and support fellows.
Fellows are held to a high standard and monitored to ensure they adhere to three core values: improving students? academic achievement, developing critical thinking skills and building a culture of achievement.
Local teachers also attend trainings to provide insight into the rural Chinese education system. ?We?re not only learning from them but the local education administrators are also learning from us,? said Linshuo.
Long-term change
Fellows hope more students can accede to higher levels of education, but realize that often results in a rural brain drain as students choose to move to cities permanently. Linshuo wants to encourage her students otherwise.
?I want to build a sense of giving back so they know they?re not just learning to get a good grade but they?re learning to be able to come back in the future and build their own communities.?
Beyond the classroom, developing dialog between local education leaders and TFC fellows is an important part of the organization?s goal to create lasting change in the education system and in the lives of rural children. And while TFC fellowships are only two years, the organization hopes to build lasting partnerships with schools.
TFC also encourages fellows to continue their development as they move into other sectors, helping them find graduate school and internship opportunities. TFC expects past fellows to continue to be lifelong advocates for educational equality in China across industries.

Soul Train fans bop on Broadway in Cornelius fete (AP)
NEW YORK ? Fans of "Soul Train" boogied down Broadway wearing afro wigs and bell bottoms on Saturday while others recounted their favorite episodes at a Harlem meeting hall in tribute to the show's late creator, Don Cornelius.
About 100 dancers descended on Times Square in a "flash mob" organized through the Internet. As startled tourists looked on, they recreated one of the show's "Soul Train lines" in which people would take turns dancing toward a TV camera while showing off their most outrageous moves.
"Don Cornelius was a big influence in my life, and I just wanted to pay tribute," said disc jockey Jon Quick, as he held up a speaker blasting disco grooves. "He was playing the music that nobody else wanted to play. He was an amazing man."
Cornelius, 75, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday. He had suffered from health problems, a difficult divorce, and had pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor spousal battery charge in 2009.
But on Saturday fans praised Cornelius' vision in creating, hosting and selling "Soul Train" to television stations that were originally skeptical about programming aimed at blacks. The show aired from 1971 to 2006.
"Don Cornelius brought soul to the whole world," said Ramona Hamm, 37, who came to Times Square with her 9-year-old daughter, Kayla Charles. The dancers bounced down Broadway for about 45 minutes until police told the party to disperse.
In Harlem, activist Al Sharpton led a tribute to Cornelius as part of the weekly community meeting at the headquarters of his National Action Network. In 1974, a 19-year-old Sharpton appeared on "Soul Train" to present an award to musician James Brown.
Singer Roberta Flack said Cornelius was an inspiration to other black performers and entrepreneurs.
"He didn't have a great big light telling him, `Go over here, don't go over there, watch where you step, there's a hole right there,'" Flack said. "He stepped."
Former "Soul Train" dancer Tyrone Proctor recalled how he hid in the trunk of a friend's car to get through the gates of the studio where "Soul Train" was filmed in 1972. Cornelius liked his dance moves and let him stay, dubbing Proctor "The Bone" because he was so skinny.
"He turned us into stars," Proctor said. Moves that "Soul Train" dancers developed spread nationwide and are now staples of music videos and pop concerts.
"Blocking, popping, ticking, waacking, punking ? when Madonna does what she does at the Super Bowl, you'll see some of these things done there," Proctor said. "Don Cornelius created all of this. It came out of his mind."
Fans recalled tuning in to see "Soul Train's" cartoon train chugging across their television screens. When Flack recalled Cornelius' stiff-necked delivery, the Harlem crowd of about 300 people laughed knowingly.
William "A.J. Dynamite" Aponte, a keyboard player, said he was ecstatic as a kid when his idol, Elton John, appeared on the show. He says the appearance showed that people of all races could find common ground in music.
"He sang `Benny and the Jets,' and I thought it was so great because Elton John is not black, he's white and he's British," Aponte said. "It influenced me to want to do music."
Proctor said Cornelius was also generous. When Proctor won a car on "American Bandstand," "Soul Train's" competition, Cornelius paid the $334.25 in taxes so the struggling dancer could receive his award.
"He wrote the check out and that was it, no questions asked. He just said, `Go get the car,'" Proctor said.
Proctor and other speakers said they were shocked when they heard that Cornelius had committed suicide. Author Terrie Williams named other black performers who had killed themselves and said Cornelius' death should be a warning for victims of depression to seek help.
"One of the things that Don's death brought us to is that we've got to look in the mirror before we end up in this kind of situation," Sharpton told the crowd.

Eric Holguin, an off-duty Los Angeles police officer who attended the Cardinals-Chargers game in October of 2010 and wore Cardinals colors at Qualcomm Stadium, said that he was kicked out of the stadium after saying ?F? you? to two Chargers fans who challenged him to a fight. Security personnel removed him from the stadium for the obscenity, and now he?s filing a lawsuit.
?A fan has a right to say ?[expletive] you? in public. It?s a public place,? Holguin?s attorney, Mary Frances Prevost, told 10 News in San Diego.
Holguin?s lawsuit seeks an injunction asking the city of San Diego to stop enforcing rules for fan behavior at Petco Park and Qualcomm stadium, including the NFL?s Fan Code of Conduct, which ban obscene and offensive language.
The San Diego City Attorney?s Office, however, has said that it?s concerned that profane arguments can escalate into violence, and that families will be less likely to go to games if they believe they?re going to be subjected to profanity. The Chargers also issued a statement supporting the NFL Code of Conduct.
?The NFL?s Code of Conduct has helped make fans further aware that their behavior has an impact on others, and ultimately has helped curtail the number of incidents league-wide,? the Chargers? statement said. ?The NFL Code of Conduct has been and will continue to be a strong asset to our efforts.?
That is, it will continue if Holguin?s lawsuit is unsuccessful.

Diplomat: UN to vote on Syria peace plan
Updated at 3:55 a.m. ET: Russia Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warns Washington that any attempt to put a draft resolution on Syria to a vote at the United Nations would lead to a "scandal," The Associated Press reports. He says Russia hopes "bias will not prevail over common sense."
Updated at 2:55 a.m. ET: NBC News reports a crowd of Syrian Americans has gathered outside the Syrian Embassy in Washington, D.C., calling for President Bashar al-Assad to stand down. "One, two, three, four, no dictator anymore, five, six, seven, eight, stop the killing, stop the hate," they chant.

A U.N. diplomat revealed the Security Council agenda Friday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to be quoted by the media.
The move toward a vote came after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke by telephone with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in an effort to overcome Russian opposition to any statement that explicitly calls for regime change or a military intervention in Syria.

"UN Security Council is set to meet 9:00 a.m. (EST) Saturday," Britain's U.N. mission announced on Twitter on Friday. "Plan is to vote on Syria resolution." Other missions confirmed the announcement but reports of the meeting time.
Estimated 5,400 deaths
Assad's regime has been intensifying an assault against army defectors and protesters. The U.N. said weeks ago that more than 5,400 people have been killed in violence since March. Hundreds more have been killed since that tally was announced.
Syrian activists Friday said an evening assault by government forces in the central city of Homs killed 200 people and wounded hundreds.

(on this page)Two main opposition groups, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees, said the death toll in Homs was more than 200 people in shelling that began late Friday. "This is the worst attack of the uprising, since the uprising began in March until now," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the head of the Observatory, which tracks violence through contacts on the ground.
The reports could not be independently confirmed.
The Syrian government denied it bombarded Homs and blamed the deaths on unspecified gunmen, Sky News reported.

Earlier on Friday, deadly clashes erupted between government troops and rebels in suburbs of the Syrian capital and villages in the south, sparking fighting that killed at least 23 people, including nine soldiers, activists said.
Assad is trying to crush the revolt with a sweeping crackdown that has so far claimed thousands of lives, but neither the government nor the protesters are backing down and clashes between the military and an increasingly bold and armed opposition has meant many parts of the country have seen relentless violence.
Embassies stormed
Protesters stormed Syrian embassies in Berlin, Cairo and London late Friday.
In Berlin, about 30 people broke in and destroyed a portrait of Assad and trashed the embassy building, Die Welt said.
The BBC reported about 150 people stormed the embassy in London, and five people who gained entry were arrested. Embassy windows were reportedly smashed and demonstrators say police "kettled" people and prevented them from leaving.
Anass Toma, a Syrian MBA student, told the BBC he attended the Belgrave Square protest over the "massacre" in Homs.
"People are angry. I'm worried about the situation back home. I've been in London two years but I'm Syrian, from Aleppo," he said.
In Kuwait, demonstrators stormed into the Syrian Embassy compound on Saturday, breaking windows and hoisting the flag of the opposition, witnesses there said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
They said there were no serious injuries at the embassy, where protesters ripped down the Syrian flag. Police later cleared the area and blocked roads.
Protests were also reported in Athens, Greece; Istanbul, Turkey; and Madrid, Spain.
Saturday protests were announced for Sidney, Australia; Montreal, Canada; and New York.
