House of Light: Friday Five: Things We Read This Week

The Friday Five is our weekly roundup of links to smart articles and helpful resources across the Web.

1. We were so pleased to see the Los Angeles Times printed a wonderful op-ed piece by Dr. Ira Byock, a leading physician in hospice and palliative care, this week. We believe that articles such as these, "Rational healthcare, not rationing," encourage discussion about how to change the way we treat the dying in our country. And, we believe that with more open discussion, more individuals will have their end of life wishes fulfilled.

2. Educating healthcare professionals about the end of life process is a key component to changing how healthcare helps individuals and families approach dying. We liked this article in The Globe and Mail, "Teaching doctors a new approach to the end of life process," about how a Toronto hospital is taking a new approach. They've created a day-long session featuring actors and role-play situations to teach training doctors how to handle delicate, end of life conversations with family members.

3. In our stumblings through the Internet, seeking people's stories about dying and death, we learned about a 30-year-old who recently died and left three wishes in his will. His three wishes were: to repay his parents for any debts he owed them, to give money to a homeless individual, and to leave a $500 tip for an underappreciated waiter or waitress. His family raised $500, and fulfilled Aaron's last wish. The story's gone viral, and they've now received more than $10,000, enough to change the lives of 23 individuals. That is an amazing legacy.

4. Family caregivers are often thrust into this role unexpectedly and without experience, and so it's understandable that you might have a lot of questions about caregiving. The always helpful AARP is hosting a live online chat Tuesday, July 24 with Elinor Ginzler, an expert on aging issues. You can submit questions in advance about juggling caregiving responsibilities or how to best provide care, or you can just join in the with the chat at 2 p.m. EST.

5. Are you a caregiver for a veteran? Support is now available to caregivers of veterans through the Dept. of Veterans Affairs. Visit the VA Caregiver Support website to read other caregivers' stories, find helpful resources and tip sheets, and contact information for your local Caregiver Support Coordinator.

Tips For The Successful Car Insurance Buyer | Opole

Having auto insurance is a requirement for driving. However, remember that not all auto insurance companies are the same. If you do your homework, you can get a better deal.

In general, large car insurance providers will offer sizable discounts to families in which every driver is insured by the same company. Having all the vehicles in your household insured by one company can end up saving you hundreds of dollars a year on your premiums.

Switching cars between different family members is not advisable if you want low premiums. You will get a lower premium if you only have one name on each car.

When you are shopping for a new car, keep insurance rates in mind, too. Insurance agents will be able to research which automobiles have better rates. If you?re in the market for a new or previously owned vehicle, insurance rate info could be a big factor in your choice. It is possible for you to save a good amount of money on car insurance if you purchase a car with a high safety rating.

A variety of insurance plans are available so you need to make sure you are adequately covered. Liability coverage, for example, becomes extremely important if you injure yourself or someone else, or if you damage your own vehicle or someone else?s. Insurance against uninsured drivers, as well as non-accident damage to your car like fire or flood, is also important.

Make sure you know what coverage types are important when choosing auto insurance. Although there may be tons of options at your disposal, not all make sense. You may want to fork over a little extra for collision coverage if you are accident prone.

Deciding on auto insurance is not exactly simple. If you own a lot of things you need to have the insurance to cover them. If you do not have enough coverage you may be liable for any damages over what you carry. You can be sued. It is very important to make sure you carry enough insurance coverage to protect your savings and other personal assets.

Opt out of unnecessary coverage with your auto insurance. If you have a car that is not of high monetary value, you may just want to cover your car with liability insurance. Drop it and you will save a substantial amount of money each month. Also, look into taking off liability and comprehensive coverage.

You should not buy your teenager his or her own car. Instead, allow them to drive a vehicle your family already has. If you add them to your insurance policy, it will cost less. Many insurers provide discounts for being honor roll students or earning good grades, so encourage your teen to do well in school.

Certain vehicles are inherently more expensive to insure than others. If you want a top of the line, luxurious vehicle, your insurance will be higher. If you want to save money, try purchasing something modest.

If you have an offer from the insurance company to purchase a warranty to cover the parts that were used in your vehicle repair, do your research before you bite. Repair shops are generally required to have a guarantee period on any labor they do, and product makers also usually have these types of warranties in place as well. Do your research to find out if there is any kind of guarantee, before you spend any money on a warranty that isn?t necessary.

Always be certain to purchase property damage liability coverage as part of your auto insurance policy. This type of coverage will cover damage sustained in an accident. In most of the United States, property damage liability is required by law. This sort of insurance will protect you if you are involved in a crash.

Make sure you keep good records of your paid insurance bills. If you were ever to run into an issue with your insurer, having this proof in your car would keep you from getting another ticket for failure to have proof of insurance.

If you are hunting for cheaper premiums then relocating to a different area might be helpful. Premiums and insurance requirements can vary widely depending on your region. You may be able to save money on auto insurance by moving to another city or state.

If you want to maintain your low auto insurance premium, you must continue to drive carefully. If you are able to avoid citations or collisions, you are more likely to receive offers for cheaper premium payments. This savings can really add up over time, and you may even get a larger discount every year you do not get into an accident or get a ticket. This will also prevent a rise in your insurance premiums.

Avoid letting your coverage lapse to keep your policy rates low. If you continuously switch insurance providers, it will make gaps in coverage. Your insurance provider may increase your rates when they discover these lapses.

You do not need a lawyer unless you have a claim over $25K. Instead, try to reach a settlement by using the claims adjuster. An attorney is usually more hassle than they are worth.

If it is time for your policy to be renewed, it is important to thoroughly look over your information. Keep your information current. If you have a different job, you could save, if you drive less to get there.

See if your auto policy will cover aftermarket additions before buying any. Insurance often doesn?t cover these parts separately, but only the difference between the value of the car with and without those parts, which is often not a lot.

Car insurance rates vary from person to person. The difference in price is a not just a matter of the car that the driver is driving and their driving record. For some, they are able to get excellent coverage without spending a lot. By learning more about auto insurance, you too will be able to save money without sacrificing good coverage.

Still, technology has additionally reared its ugly head to make all forms of hazards on the roads it?s additionally serving to guard. Drivers have gotten increasingly distracted by cell phones whereas driving. activate the TV or check the web and you most likely see a story somewhere a few texting-while-driving accident.

The national is considering a ban on phone use whereas driving and most states have already implemented hands free laws yet. Despite this, the matter continues to grow. the most issue is with the drivers? mind and not with their hands. Talking on the phone whereas driving distracts the drivers focus from the road to the phone. it?ll solely exasperate, in concert study recently showed that whereas teens recognize of the hazards of driving and texting, they?re still doing it regardless. The temptation to use a phone whereas driving can solely increase as automobile manufactures begin to integrate sensible phone technology into their automobile styles. The Department of Transportation is attempting to limit this trend whereas the general public continues to embrace it. automobile manufacturers have gotten caught within the cross fireplace.

One the most important areas that may be improved is that of smartphone integration. Most new cars being sold can have a phone deck or mount that phones will be connected to. A driver wouldn?t ought to use their hands and will simply look at the phone as required, whether or not it?s for mapping, an incoming decision or anything. This still does not keep distractions away, however it?d limit it, like having a GPS on your dashboard. Dashboards are currently having bit screens and computers put in into them yet with the potential to download data into them.

Voice management is rising because the best choice to assist management driver distraction. Apple has already had tremendous success with Suri, their voice activated recognition software. automobile manufacturers hope to successfully integrate similar software into their vehicles. you?ll keep your hands on the wheel, discuss with the automobile or phone, and hopefully keep targeted and alive.

Another attention-grabbing possibility that?s being experimented with is putting in heads-up-displays (HUD?s) into the windshield of cars. very similar to a fighter jet, it might project date onto the windshield for the motive force to examine. In fact, currently they need developed glass with micro imaging capabilities engineered into it. whereas this has potential it?s still remote from wide unfold use. it might additionally build cracking a windshield an incredibly expensive factor to switch. another time though, would this distract drivers quite it might facilitate them?

Sadly, the technology is progressing faster than it will manufacture answers to the queries it creates. None of those answers address the difficulty of driver distraction, they simply hope to curb it. {the only|the thereforele} possible way to try to to so is to show the phone and drive while not it, however we have a tendency to all recognize Americans are not near to do this.

South Florida athlete set for London Paralympics

BOYNTON BEACH?

? Noah Yablong can beat a lot of tennis players sitting down. As a Paralympian, that comes with the territory.

The 24-year-old athlete from Ocean Ridge, across the Intracoastal, is among the best wheelchair tennis players in the world. He's one of nine American players traveling to London this summer to compete in the Paralympic Games. Five nights per week, weather permitting, Yablong meets his longtime coach at the Boynton Beach Tennis Center.

"I have it, and I found a way to deal with it," Yablong says.

"It" is Legg Calve Perthes disease, a bone disorder that literally killed his femur, starving it of blood until the cartilage wasted away. The pain and the effects aren't unlike arthritis. At 10 he had the right hip of a 70-year-old man.

As a boy he played basketball, baseball and soccer, and dabbled in tennis and golf.

"He was very fleet-footed; I mean the kid was fast," said his father, Jeffrey Yablong, an emergency physician. The diagnosis explained why his son was becoming more lethargic and mentioning leg pain.

"I was really crestfallen, more for Noah," he said.

At 11, surgeons in Chicago changed the shape of his femur to stop Yablong's leg from slipping out of his hip when he walked. His father describes the result: "Instead of having a ball in the socket, he has an arrowhead, with the arrow pointing up." Bone grinds on bone.

Yablong can walk, but he's gripped with pain if he goes too far. On a recent evening, he pushed his wheelchair from a white sport utility vehicle to a tennis court 100 yards away. That's about as far he goes.

It was that pain that made him sedentary through his preteen years, growing up in Indiana, Yablong said.

"Sports, for me, had fallen by the wayside," he said.

Then a friend with muscular dystrophy started playing basketball on Saturdays at a nearby center for the disabled. Yablong, then 12, came along and discovered that he could play tennis, too. Soon he attended an International Tennis Federation junior camp, where he met his coach, Kari Yerg, a municipal recreation director from Boynton Beach.

One thing led to another. He played well enough in tournaments for the disabled to become the No. 1 ranked junior tennis player in the United States and the fifth in the world.

The University of Arizona has a wheelchair tennis team, so he went there and studied engineering. School chipped away at his practice time, he said, but he kept playing and winning ? in Boca Raton, in Europe, in Australia, in South Korea. Those tournaments gave him enough clout to draw a wildcard spot in the Paralympic Games, sponsored by the U.S. Tennis Association.

When he flies to London on Aug. 23, he joins an elite class of disabled tennis players, 112 from around the world. After a recent practice he still couldn't decide whether he was nervous yet.

"That's the question everybody asks me," he said, after some thought. "We'll know when I get there."

Probiotics for Pets: Dogs and Cats | ApostolicCM.com Answers

Probiotics are advantageous bacteria, the ?good? or ?friendly? bacteria that populate the entire digestive system and play an important role in digestion, nutrient intake and immune system function. Regrettably, many individuals have been lead to think that all bacteria are dangerous, but the fact is that we live in symbiosis with valuable bacteria throughout our atmosphere, and some of the most important are our helpful abdominal bacteria. The average creature, depending on size, can have up to four pounds of bacteria in his system with the majority living in the digestive system. Your dog might become very sick or die minus the right intestinal bacteria, and unfortunately this actually occurs more frequently than many people understand. Many healthy veterinarians feel that imbalances in intestinal bacteria certainly are a significant element in many of the chronic disorders that we see in our animals today. My experience with animals leads me to believe this is really true!Probiotics play some vital functions in your animal?s system such as:*Help the intestinal tract function properly by producing enzymes that aid digestion and the assimilation of nutrients.*Manufacture T vitamins.*Help reduce cholesterol.*Keep ranges of pathogenic bacteria (E. Salmonella and Helicobacter pylori), coli and pathogenic fungi (Candida albicans) under control by competing for nutrients and available space. In inclusion, valuable bacteria produce antibiotic like materials and acidify the intestinal tract by producing lactic acid, both that hinder unsafe bacteria growth and the toxic substances they produce.*Protect against tooth decay and gum inflammation.*Help to maintain a wholesome mucous lining (mucosa) in the intestinal tract. This assists in the elimination of bacteria, food particles and toxic substances from entering the blood stream. The outcomes of a damaged mucosa in many cases are referred to as Leaky Gut Syndrome which adds to allergy like endemic infections, skin circumstances, indicators, arthritis and other disease processes.*Maintain or improve immune system health. Since 70% of the immune system in animals is observed in the gastrointestinal tract, a wholesome mucosal lining populated by beneficial bacteria is very important to fighting and preventing infection. In addition, useful bacteria will also be found in the respiratory system where they help guard the body against attack by dangerous germs.*Aid in the absorption of magnesium that?s useful for hundreds of different features throughout the body. A magnesium deficiency can result in asthma and migraines and have different dramatic effects on your pet?s health.*Synthesize vitamin K that?s required to clog the blood and keep bones strong.Anything that places tension on the system can reduce degrees of probiotics. Common causes include poor diet, antibiotics, steroids, NSAIDs, surgery, drugs, chronic and acute diarrhea, chlorinated water, artificial materials and additives in foods, contaminants in food and the environment, and pressure. Since many of these problems are hard to prevent, I believe that you should provide your pet with a quality probiotic product on an ongoing basis to assure that a, viable population of useful bacteria are usually present in the intestinal tract.Probiotics might be particularly recommended in circumstances where there are symptoms of imbalance or in which healthy bacterial numbers may be negatively affected creating your animal vulnerable to infection, such as with antibiotic or steroid use. An imbalance between friendly and unfriendly bacteria in the body plays a role in lots of the continual conditions we see today. Indicators can include:*Allergies and food sensitivities.*Fatigue, constipation or diarrhea.*Poor digestion that displays as gasoline or belly pain.*Poor vitamin compression that displays as weight loss or insufficient weight gain.*Painful joint irritation or stiffness.*Bad breathing, gum sickness and dental problems.*Frequent infections.*Chronic yeast problems, which present as itchy/infected ears/skin.Supplementing with probiotics is easy and secure and a great insurance coverage since not merely do pleasant microbes minimize obviously in the body as your spouse ages, but our animals come into contact with so many things in everyday life that reduce healthy intestinal flora.

Witness: Zimmerman did not like black people

A statement has been released by "witness 9," an unidentified person who's told authorities that George Zimmerman may be racially biased. NBC's Janet Shamlian has the details.

By Kari Huus, msnbc.com

An unnamed witness who grew up around George Zimmerman contacted authorities after the shooting death of Trayvon Martin because she feared that Zimmerman was motivated by a prejudice against black people, she said in recorded conversations with investigators. The witness also alleges that Zimmerman molested her over the course of a decade, starting when she was 6 years old.

The woman, known in the records as Witness #9, spoke to the investigators on March 20, interviewers in the audio recording indicated. The recording was released by the Florida State Attorney's Office on Monday under the state's open records laws. The identity of the witness was not released, but NBC News has reported she is a cousin.

Zimmerman's defense team had attempted to block the release of the audiotapes, but their motion was denied by Seminole County Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Lester.

"Growing up, (Zimmerman) and his family always made statements that they didn?t like black people if they don?t act like white people," the witness, who would be about 27 now, told investigators in the taped conversation. "They like black people if they act white. Other than that, they talked a lot of bad things about black people."

Asked if she could cite a specific instance where Zimmerman expressed racial bias, the witness said she could not recall one, and did not know of specific actions he had taken against black people in the past.

"It?s just a known thing that that?s how the family feels," she said.

In a separate taped interview with investigators, Witness #9 alleges that Zimmerman took opportunities when the families were together to sexually molest her. The alleged incidents would have taken place when Zimmerman, two years older than the witness, was between 8 and 18 years old.

The earliest incident she said she could remember took place when she was about 6 years old while she was staying with the Zimmerman family in Virginia while her mother and father moved to Orlando, Fla., from Louisiana. She alleges that Zimmerman groped her under the blanket, the first in a series of traumatic incidents that she says continued at family get-togethers until she was about 16.

No police report or charges were ever filed in the case.

It was unclear how or if the prosecution would use the sexual abuse allegations by the witness.

Watch the most-viewed videos on msnbc.com

Zimmerman's defense attorney, Mark O'Mara, tried to block release of both tapes by the special prosecutor on grounds that it was irrelevant to the Martin case.

"The motion further contends that this irrelevant statement should be withheld from public dissemination because of the substantial risk that public disclosure will lead to widespread hostile publicity which would substantially impair the Defendant's fair trial rights, and would pose a serious threat to the administration of justice," O'Mara said in a statement posted to the Zimmerman defense web site.

"Now that this statement is part of the public record, the defense will vigorously defend Mr. Zimmerman against the allegations. In the next several weeks, there will be reciprocal discovery filed regarding Witness #9's statement," the statement said.

O'Mara also sought to keep sealed about 130 of Zimmerman's jailhouse phone calls that were also released on Monday.

Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Trayvon Martin's family, issued a statement saying that the woman's testimony contained in the tapes should be included in the evidence.

"Zimmerman's mentality is very relevant to this trial," said Crump. "As the State Attorney previously stated, (Witness #9) certainly would be a rebuttal witness very similar to that in the Sandusky trial showing that (Zimmerman) has a history of violence and manipulation."

Crump was referring to Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State assistant football coach who awaits sentencing after being convicted last month of 45 counts for abusing 10 boys.

Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 26 shooting death of Martin, 17, who was unarmed and walking through the gated neighborhood of Sanford, Fla., where Martin's father and Zimmerman lived.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty, and asserts that he was acting in self-defense after Martin?punched him in the face and repeatedly slammed his head into the sidewalk. He is out of jail on bail and awaiting trial.

The case has ignited an emotional nationwide debate on race and gun rights.

New therapeutic target for prostate cancer identified

New therapeutic target for prostate cancer identified

?2012 Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers

A small, naturally occurring nucleic acid sequence, called a microRNA, known to regulate a number of different cancers, appears to alter the activity of the androgen receptor, which plays a critical role in prostate cancer. Directly targeting microRNA-125b to block androgen receptor activity represents a novel approach for treating castrate-resistant prostate cancer. This promising new strategy for improving the effectiveness of anti-androgenic and other hormonal therapies is described in an article in BioResearch Open Access.

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer affecting men and the second most common cause of cancer death among men. In the article "miR-125b Regulation of Androgen Receptor Signaling Via Modulation of the Receptor Complex Co-Repressor NCOR2," Xiaoping Yang, Lynne Bernis, Lih-Jen Su, Dexiang Gao, and Thomas Flaig, University of Colorado Denver (Aurora) and University of Minnesota (Duluth), looked for targets of microRNA-125b that might shed light on its role in regulating prostate cancer and found that it directly inhibits NCOR2, which acts to repress the androgen receptor. The authors point out that "the androgen receptor is a critical therapeutic target in prostate cancer" and that alterations in the receptor are essential for the development of castrate-resistant prostate cancer, in which the disease no longer responds to hormonal therapies.

"This research provides new insight into the mechanism of miR-125b regulation of castrate-resistance prostate cancer through the identification of a novel target for miR-125b," says Editor-in-Chief Jane Taylor, PhD, MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine, University of Edinburgh, Scotland. "The clinical implications of this study are that targeted regulation of this miRNA may lead to more effective anticancer therapies."

Making Easy Child Friendly Home Improvements - Pinakes ...

When you?re attempting to patch up drywall, it?s important that you do not go crazy on the spackle. The idea is to put a little bit on, scrape it down completely and then, allow it to dry. Caking it on will result in an uneven finish, no matter how much you sand the surface after it dries.

Perpetually closed doors can make a hallway or corridor appear uninviting and uncomfortably narrow. Replace your solid door with a French door, which has a series of clear glass panels framed by wood. If you are concerned with privacy, opt for translucent glass or an adhesive to give the glass a ?frosted? look. Home Depot and Lowe?s carry adhesive window films for under twenty dollars.

Create a catching focal point in your living room or hallway by hanging a collection of mismatched silver serving trays. They not only add an interesting extra to your home, but they are mighty fun to collect. Go to flea markets, antique stores or second hand shops, to find the most interesting trays you can display.

If you?re thinking about putting down carpeting for your home, make sure to choose carpeting in dark colors only. Light colors such as beige, white, or light brown tend to pick up dirt and stains, making your carpeting appear cheap and used. Opt for colors like dark green or dark brown to hide what shouldn?t be seen and prolong the life of your carpet.

When you paint interior rooms during a home improvement project, allow extra drying time if your house is new. Newer homes are usually built with extremely effective (nearly air-tight) separation between the interior and exterior. While this is an advantage for you as a homeowner in most situations, when you paint inside, your paint will take longer to dry than the paint manufacturer might claim.

A well known rule for doing any kind of construction, repair, or renovation work is to measure twice and cut once. This age old saying still holds up today in every circumstance. Following this rule will allow you to avoid costly and time consuming mistakes associated with projects by using less materials and saving time and effort on labor.

If you use a variety of appliances or computers and peripheral devices, use power strips. Using power strips prevents wasteful energy use because the strips ensure your devices are only drawing power when they are in use. Appliances, cell phones and computers draw power even when they are not in use when you plug them directly into an outlet.

Always select energy-efficient windows for home improvement projects. Modern windows conserve energy in a variety of ways, from special glass coatings to tight-sealing gaskets. The most efficient of modern double-glazed windows even have noble-gas-filled glazing cavities to prevent heat transmission. High-tech windows can help the homeowner realize significant savings on heating and cooling.

If you have decided to re-do your hardwood floors, then think of them like you would re-do fingernails. You would want to take off the old finish, apply a base coat, stain, and then apply the top coat, If you prefer the look of the natural wood color, then you can skip the staining step. With a little effort, your floors will be beautiful.

NEW ? Woodward Tahoe ? Gymnastics Coaching.com

So NEW it?s not on Wikipedia yet.

Woodward Tahoe opened a few weeks ago. This company is expanding.

Woodward Copper opened 2008.

Woodward Beijing opened 2010.

Click PLAY or watch Tahoe?s Opening Day video on YouTube.

Jon Slaughter, Marketing Director, is justifiable proud of progress made. They broke ground on the impressive 34,000 square foot facility only about 11 months prior to opening. It?s at Boreal Mountain Resort close to Lake Tahoe, California.

Click PLAY or watch ? Nate Wessel explain the design on YouTube. Including the Trampoline Park with a ?Supertramp?.

That Supertramp is not one of those built by Dave Ross / Rebound. It?s a new design. I got to bounce on it myself ??BIG AIR ? SLOW ? and SOFT.

The highlight for many of the kids visiting is that pit jump. HUGE AIR on a bike.

Lauren Gearhart moved from Copper to get the Cheer program up-and-running at Tahoe. She explained that Artistic Gymnastics will not be offered at this camp due to space limitations. Action sports share tumbling, trampoline and pits with Cheer. It?s a natural fit.

Rod Floor, tumbling trampoline and full Cheer Floor are in place.

They?ll be no Artistic Gymnastics at this Woodward. A bit of a trend for the company, I?m thinking. Action Sports are the priority.

Woodward Tahoe looks like a winner to me. It will run winter and summer. It?s atop the Donner Pass on Highway 80, West of Truckee, California.

Training Action Sports gets a little bit safer. :)

NBA Summer League 2012: Hawks Open Against Wizards

The Hawks begin Summer League action on Friday afternoon at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas. Atlanta will face the Washington Wizards in a matchup between a pair of teams both looking to rebuild their franchises.

Neither team has played a Summer League game yet, so this will be the first opportunity to see some of this young talent in action. As it's been noted already, Summer League play provides the first look at John Jenkins, who will headline the Hawks' roster as their top draft pick out of Vanderbilt.

In trading Joe Johnson to the Nets and Marvin Williams to the Jazz, the Hawks are hoping to discover an impact player this summer, if he's out there.

The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.

Read more on the Hawks at Peachtree Hoops and SB Nation Atlanta. Head over to Bullets Forever and SB Nation DC for the Wizards fans' perspective. Our dedicated NBA hub page is your source for news and analysis around the league.

Investors retreat from stock mutual funds in June ...

BOSTON (AP) ? A rising market didn't instill confidence last month, as investors continued to withdraw more from stock mutual funds than they deposited into them.

Investors withdrew a net $7.7 billion from U.S. stock funds in June, according to industry consultant Strategic Insight. It was the fourth consecutive month that money was pulled out of stock funds, and the biggest monthly total this year. Through June, net withdrawals total $15 billion.

The Standard & Poor's 500 stock index rose about 4 percent in June, but the previous month's 6 percent decline apparently was fresh in investors' minds.

"Gains in the stock market have not emboldened investors, who worry about the ever-present risk of future losses," said Avi Nachmany, research director with New York-based Strategic Insight.

Although cash flowed out of U.S. stock funds last month, Strategic Insight said on Thursday that investors deposited a net $5.4 billion into funds investing in foreign stocks. Year-to-date, international stock funds have attracted $33 billion in new cash.

Here are additional details about how investors moved their money in June, according to Strategic Insight:

Bond funds: June's net deposits of $15 billion into bond funds came mostly from taxable bond funds. Those funds, which primarily invest in corporate bonds, attracted a net $10.9 billion. An additional $4.3 billion was deposited into municipal bond funds, which invest in bonds issued by state and local governments. Through the first half of the year, taxable bond funds have attracted a net of about $121 billion in cash, with $28 billion flowing into muni bond funds. Overall, bond funds have attracted cash for 10 consecutive months, beginning last September. However, net deposits into bond funds have recently slowed, with about half as much money flowing in during this year's second quarter compared with the first quarter.

Money-market funds: A net $42 billion was withdrawn from these funds in June, compared with just $2 billion that flowed out in May. Money-market funds are designed to be safe harbors where investors can temporarily park cash and quickly access it when needed. However, their appeal has been reduced because returns have been barely above zero ? they're now averaging 0.03 percent ? for about three years. Money fund returns are closely tied to interest rates. Prospects of higher returns dimmed in January when the Federal Reserve said it doesn't expect to raise its benchmark rate until late 2014, at the earliest, because the economic recovery remains fragile.

? Exchange-traded funds: Investors deposited a net $16 billion into ETFs, which bundle together investments in a particular market index. Over the first half of the year, net deposits into all ETFs total $75 billion, putting ETFs on track to record a sixth consecutive year of attracting more than $100 billion in new cash. Unlike mutual funds, ETFs can be traded during daily sessions just like stocks. ETFs continue to grow much faster than mutual funds, with net deposits totaling $115 billion last year.

Papua New Guinea charges 29 alleged cannibals

(AP) ? Authorities have arrested 29 people accused of being part of a cannibal cult in Papua New Guinea's jungle interior and charged them with the murders of seven suspected witch doctors, police said Friday.

Madang Police Commander Anthony Wagambie confirmed a report in The National newspaper that said the cult members allegedly ate their victims' brains raw and made soup from their penises.

"They don't think they've done anything wrong; they admit what they've done openly," Wagambie told The Associated Press by telephone.

He said the killers believed that their victims practiced "sanguma," or sorcery, and that they had been extorting money as well as demanding sex from poor villagers for their supernatural services.

By eating witch doctors' organs, the cult members believed they would attain supernatural powers and literally become bullet-proof, he said.

"It's prevalent cult activity," Wagambie said. He said he believes there could be between 700 and 1,000 cult members in several villages in Papua New Guinea's remote northeast interior. All of them might have eaten human flesh, he said.

According to the report in The National, which is published in Papua New Guinea, 28 men and women appeared in a Madang court on Tuesday. Wagambie said they were charged with willful murder.

It was not clear what happened to the 29th suspect. Murder is punishable by death in Papua New Guinea, a poor South Pacific island nation.

Wagambie said the suspects were not required to plea to the murder charges and were being held in custody.

Police will gather more witness statements before pressing charges related to the cannibalism allegations, he said.

Cannibalism was part of traditional culture in Papua New Guinea, where human flesh was known as "long pig," and survived in isolated pockets into the latter part of the 20th century while the country was under Australian colonial rule.

Wagambie, 36, said he had never heard of a previous case of cannibalism in his lifetime.

He expected police would make around 100 arrests over the weekend for cult-related crimes.

Four of the seven victims were murdered last week, Wagambie said, adding that no remains had been recovered.

"They're probably all eaten up," he said.

Crop technology helps limit corn losses in drought

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? For months, Illinois farmer David Kellerman held out hope for rain, even as the worst drought in nearly 25 years spread across the country.

He finally gave up when the temperature hit 108 three days in a row. Corn won't develop kernels if it gets too warm during pollination, and Kellerman knew the empty cobs in the fields where he works would never fill out. Just after the Fourth of July, he and the neighbor he farms with took an extraordinary step: They cut down the entire crop and baled the withered plants to use as hay for their cattle.

Almost a third of the nation's corn crop has been damaged by heat and drought, and a number of farmers in the hardest hit areas of the Midwest have cut down their crops just midway through the growing season. But the nation could still see one of the largest harvests in U.S. history, thanks to new plant varieties developed to produce more corn per acre and better resist drought.

Kellerman said he was surprised his corn fared as well as it did, growing to a decent height even though there had been less than an inch of rain since mid-April. The dirt in the area where he farms near Du Bois, Ill., has the consistency of dust, but it wasn't until the extreme heat "fried" the plants, that he lost hope.

"Genetics are much better," he said. "Corn five years ago would never have lasted this long."

Corn production has been improving steadily for decades, the result of scientific advances going back to the introduction of the first commercial hybrid in 1923. Genetic engineering accelerated the process in recent years and allowed the development of some strains that borrow DNA from other species for pest resistance.

Corn farmers expected this to be a record year when they planted, sowing 96.4 million acres, the most since 1937. The U.S. Department of Agriculture predicted they would get 166 bushels per acre.

But after months with little or no rain and extreme heat in large portions of the Corn Belt, the USDA on Wednesday revised that estimate, saying it now expects farmers to average just 146 bushels per acre this year.

That would still be an improvement from a decade ago, when the average was about 129 bushels. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack still expects the nation to produce the third-largest corn crop in American history, even as he announced disaster-relief measures for farmers, like Kellerman, who have lost everything.

"It is important to point out that improved seed technology and improved efficiencies on the farm have made it a little bit easier for some producers to get through a very, very difficult weather stretch," Vilsack said. "Our hope is rains come to the central part of the United States soon to be able to salvage what can be salvaged."

The drought stretches from parts of Ohio to California. The historic drought that gripped Texas and other parts of the Southwest last year was more severe, but this year's dry spell is notable for the sheer size of the affected land.

"To see something on this continental scale, where we're seeing such a large portion of the country in drought, you have to go back to 1988," said Brad Rippey, a USDA agricultural meteorologist.

That year, farmers saw corn yields, or the amount produced per acre, drop by nearly a third.

This year's loss, so far, is expected to be half that ? one reason why people like Bill Gates believe better crop technology will be the key to feeding the world as the population grows and climate changes.

Jeff Schussler, a senior research manager for DuPont Pioneer, said the company's studies show corn hybrids today can produce 50 percent more bushels of corn per inch of water than those of 50 years ago. Working with genes that affect root and leaf development and plant reproduction, scientists also have created much more stable corn plants that can withstand a wider variety of climate conditions, he said.

"All these hybrids that have been produced in the last few years are built for drought tolerance so we have a little more hope that they will be able to withstand some of this heat, more so than they would have say 10 years ago," said Garry Niemeyer, who grows corn and soybeans in Auburn, Ill., and is president of the National Corn Growers Association.

He said plants have been developed with a larger root mass, which allows them to reach deeper for water and hold more in reserve. Certain varieties also are capable of rolling up their leaves to slow moisture loss.

"There's a lot of technology that goes into our corn crop," Niemeyer said.

Still, it's hard to say how the year will turn out with about half of the growing season to go.

Corn plants today withstand drought better than they did in 1988, but no variety exists that can produce significant yields without rain for six weeks and sustained temperatures above 100 degrees, said Tony Vyn, an agronomy professor at Purdue University.

"You get to the point where the water shortage is so severe that technology is not going to guarantee yield, even when you might have that expectation," he said. "My experience thus far is that drought-tolerant hybrids are no silver bullet."
