Childhood Obesity and the Family Physician, Part 1 - Profound Health

Tega Cay family physicians declare what many other doctors around the nation are declaring: one the most avoidable health problems in our country is childhood obesity. Yet nearly 1 out of 3 children in the United States is obese. Those who are risk serious health problems, especially in their hearts, as they move into their teens, much less their adulthood years.

Dr. Katrina Herring of the Piedmont Family Practice at Tega Cay in Fort Mill, SC says that in addition to heart disease, that high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, asthma and certain types of cancer are often the result of childhood obesity. Arthritis and liver problems are also rising among those kids who are overweight.

In addition to these physical problems, Dr. Herring mentions the mental toll obesity takes on these kids. Depression and low self-esteem are common. Ridicule from peers and classmates wounds deeply and can stunt social maturity, creating emotional problems in later life.

Kids don?t always grow out of everything, though they can change for the good right now. 80% of all kids who are obese at 15 will be obese at 25 years of age, so it is critical for kids to learn to make healthy choices and make lifestyle changes now.

It also requires the parents to support those choices, and, perhaps, reshape their lifestyles and approach and relationship with food and exercise to be an example and lead their children down the path toward a lifetime of healthy living.

Obesity can also be the product of genetics, but not always. As well, some medications, diseases, and hormonal imbalances might contribute to sudden gains in weight, so your family doctor must get involved immediately if a parent suspects that is the case. Fatigue, constipation, and dry skin might be proofs that one of these in is play.

Seek a family practice in Fort Mill SC, or wherever you live, if your child is obese. Part 2 is next.
