3 Apps for Surviving Friday Night

August 2, 2013 2:51 PM Text Size: A . A . A BeerCloud

We're big fans of craft brewing. But it seems every bar has turned into a brewpub overnight?stocking shelves with tracks of obscure labels that can be difficult to navigate. The free app BeerCloud provides a directory of nearby breweries and retailers, arms users with tasting descriptions and brand history, and even suggests food pairings. It's never been easier to become a can-oisseur.

Breathometer

Had a few craft beers? Reach for the Breathometer ($50), the first smartphone-enabled breathalyzer, and test your blood alcohol level using only your phone and the portable device. Plug the box into your headphone jack, exhale into the vents on the gadget, then make smart decisions based on the data. The app interface is simple enough that even someone with a righteous buzz can figure it out.

Pizza Compass

Boy, are we glad you decided to take a cab, ride with a designated driver, or walk. Now you need some carbs. Dan Blackman inspired, he says, "by a night of drinking when I couldn't find a pizza place," aims to solve that problem with Pizza Compass ($1), an iPhone and Android app that points you toward the nearest pizza place and lets you know when it's open. The app relies on Foursquare's API and smartphone-supplied location data. The result is a spinning slice (and an accompanying Google Map, covered in mini slices) that points you toward cheesy satisfaction.

Road-rage killer of 2 truckers executed in Texas

By MICHAEL GRACZYK

Associated Press

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) -- A former financial analyst with a history of disruptive behavior was executed Wednesday for the road-rage shooting deaths of two truckers in the Dallas area 15 years ago.

Douglas Feldman, 55, received lethal injection for gunning down Robert Everett, 36, of Marshfield, Mo., and Nicholas Valesquez, 62, of Irving.

Feldman mimicked the announcement a judge or jury makes when announcing a verdict, using the names of his victims and declaring he had found them guilty of crimes against him.

"I have sentenced them both to death. I personally carried out their executions," he said in a loud voice, adding that he carried out their executions in August 1998.

"As of that time, the state of Texas has been holding me illegally in confinement and by force for 15 years," Feldman said. "I hereby protest my pending execution and demand immediate relief."

He appeared very nervous, breathing quickly and his feet twitching under a sheet. As the drug began taking effect, he grimaced twice, took a few deep breaths and began snoring. Then all movement stopped.

Feldman was pronounced dead 13 minutes after the lethal drug was injected at 6:28 p.m. CDT.

Feldman's attorney, Robin Norris, filed a clemency petition with the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles that was turned down Monday. Multiple courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, earlier rejected his appeals on Feldman's behalf.

Multiple courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, earlier rejected his appeals on Feldman's behalf.

Feldman, from Richardson, was riding his motorcycle the night of Aug. 24, 1998, and said Everett, driving an 18-wheeler, cut him off on a Dallas County freeway so he took out his 9 mm pistol, pulled up alongside the truck cab and shot him. Feldman testified at his capital murder trial that he was still angry about 45 minutes later when he spotted Valesquez, a gasoline tanker driver filling a Dallas service station, and shot him.

"A security camera catches him shooting the man in cold blood," Jason January, the former Dallas County assistant district attorney who prosecuted him, said. "Several counties were frightened as this unidentified motorcyclist was out acting like `The Terminator."'

Feldman was arrested more than a week later, after shooting and wounding a man at a fast-food restaurant and driving off. A bystander saw the shooting and reported his license plate number to police, who tracked him down and found Feldman with two pistols and nearly 300 rounds of ammunition. Ballistics tests confirmed one of the guns was used in all three shootings.

"It feels wonderful to cause their death and to watch their pain," he said in one of 81 letters he wrote to a former girlfriend while awaiting his trial. The writings from the magna cum laude Southern Methodist University graduate were introduced into evidence.

"God forbid I ever had my finger on the button to launch a nuclear explosive device because I guarantee that I would wipe as many of these bastards off the face of the planet as I am able!" he said in another letter.

Without remorse, he also acknowledged the killings while testifying at his capital murder trial.

Evidence showed he got into trouble as a juvenile, had drug possession and selling issues and wound up in state custody. He also had robbery and drug convictions.

While in prison, records show Feldman racked up 136 disciplinary cases, including one for ripping out the phone in a visiting cage where death row inmates are interviewed by reporters. Texas prison officials subsequently refused him media access.

The day before the fatal shootings, evidence showed he shot up a Volkswagen dealership where he once had some work done.

"His statement just showed more of the heart of the man," John Everett said after witnessing the execution of his brother's killer. "Very dark and very evil and very unremorseful."

"I was 12 when it happened," Robert Everett's daughter, Emily, said. "Now I'm grown, married, with kids, and my dad didn't get to see any of that. I feel my dad finally has justice after 15 years."

Feldman became the 11th prisoner executed this year in Texas and third this month. At least seven other inmates are scheduled to die in the coming months in the nation's busiest capital punishment state.

AP PHOTOS: Zoo mice become prairie pioneers

GRAYSLAKE, Ill. (AP) ? To most people, mice are pests.

But on a prairie, they are a source of life and vitality.

Scientists at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo are raising meadow jumping mice and releasing them into the wild to help restore dwindling Midwestern prairies.

Right now, biologists there say only 1 percent of historical prairie grasslands remain in Illinois.

So the zoo is raising the mice and other species to help bring back restored prairies, including some at the Lake County Forest Preserves north of Chicago.

Once the mice reach adulthood, researchers anesthetize them and attach tiny radio collars so they can track their movements in the natural habitat, according to Allison Sacerdote-Velat, a reintroduction biologist at the zoo.

She and other scientists released several mice in late July at the Rollins Savanna forest preserve in Lake County. They hope the mice will mate and distribute the grassland seeds they eat to help spread the plant life.

"We need to restore certain wildlife species in order to keep the ecosystem functioning," she says.

She says trackers will likely find that some mice will end up as food for owls, coyotes and other predators.

But that's as it should be. "It's all part of the cycle," Sacerdote-Velat says.

Here's a gallery of images by photographer Scott Eisen of the mice getting radio collars at the zoo and their release in Lake County, north of Chicago.

Mexico's opposition party proposes sweeping energy reform

MEXICO CITY | Wed Jul 31, 2013 4:40pm EDT

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's opposition conservative party proposed sweeping energy reform on Wednesday to change the constitution to allow more private investment and promote competition, while the ruling party is expected to present its own plans for an overhaul next week.

Both parties favor market-friendly policies in Latin America's No. 2 economy and are expected to join forces to push through energy reform.

"Everything indicates that the (energy reform) initiative of President Pena Nieto will arrive next week," said Senator Emilio Gamboa, leader of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, in the upper chamber of Congress.

However, lawmakers from the center-right National Action Party, or PAN, were the first to come out with a detailed bill that aims to provide the biggest private-sector opening of the state-run oil sector in decades.

The party called for changes to the constitution to give oil companies incentives to boost the nation's sliding energy output.

The leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, has made clear it will not support constitutional changes, which it argues are tantamount to privatization.

"We have set the bar in line with the size of the challenge in Mexico and we urge lawmakers from the PRI and PRD to approach what we can achieve with audacity," the PAN's national chairman Gustavo Madero told reporters as the bill was unveiled in the Senate.

The PAN's bill marks the opening bid in what is expected to be a heated debate over the future of the country's ample oil and gas reserves. Mexico is the world's 10th biggest producer of crude oil, according to data from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The conservative party's proposed legislation is broadly in line with the thinking of Pena Nieto's PRI, which has also called for constitutional reforms.

The PRI will need the PAN's backing in Congress to achieve the two-thirds majority to push through constitutional reform. That would bypass a political pact forged by the three main parties, which achieved consensus on a batch of economic changes earlier this year, and could complicate future reform efforts.

CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGE

The PAN's proposal would end a prohibition on oil and gas concessions and risk-sharing contracts enshrined in Article 27 of the constitution.

In place of the ban on concessions and contracts, the text of the PAN's proposed amendment says the state "should guarantee the maximum benefit of oil profits for the nation from the work of the operators who conduct exploration and production activities."

Mexico's current sole oil and gas operator is the state-run monopoly Pemex.

Overall, the PAN's proposal would reform Articles 25, 27 and 28 of the constitution. It would eliminate public-sector exclusivity over the generation, transportation and distribution of electricity, and strengthen the country's energy regulatory bodies by making them autonomous. Those details would be dealt with in so-called secondary laws.

The bill would create a new national petroleum fund to administer the country's energy riches, but still keep all oil and gas resources under public ownership.

PAN leaders emphasized that they were open to negotiating the fine print of how oil companies would be compensated under a more open, competitive energy sector.

"At the end of the day, how you pay them, whether with money or oil, is practically the same," Salvador Vega, a PAN senator, told Reuters.

"We are not closed to any kind of model. In fact, we are looking at all types of models. That is where the most important part of the debate will be ... whether we move to a kind of royalty, taxes on products or benefits."

The PAN's bill was filed with the Senate, which will formally kick off the debate on energy reform on September 1 when the new congressional session begins.
